Gernot Rohr, head coach of the Benin Republic national team, has explained the rationale behind the inclusion of Remo Stars’ goalkeeper, Serge Obassa, in the squad for their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Nigeria and Libya.

Obassa, who was a surprise inclusion in the Cheetahs’ squad announced last week, has caught Rohr’s attention due to his knowledge of Nigerian football, which the German coach believes could be valuable for his team in their upcoming matches.

“Obassa knows Nigerian football very well since he plays for Remo Stars, which is one of the best clubs in Nigeria at the moment,” Rohr said during a press briefing in Abidjan, where the Cheetahs will face Nigeria. “So his experience and know-how can also be useful to us, whether in training or possibly in matches.”

Obassa’s familiarity with Nigerian players and football dynamics, combined with his performances for Remo Stars, make him a potentially important asset for the Benin Republic as they prepare for the tough challenge against the Super Eagles.

Rohr’s decision to bring in the Nigerian-based goalkeeper highlights his strategic approach to team selection, ensuring his squad is equipped with every advantage ahead of their crucial AFCON qualifying matches.
