Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun expresses his joy as FSV Mainz successfully secures their position in the German Bundesliga, narrowly avoiding relegation with a 2-1 away victory against Borussia Dortmund at the Signal Iduna Park on Saturday.
In a remarkable display of resilience, Bote Baku and Yoshoro Muto netted crucial goals for Mainz within the opening 15 minutes of the match, setting the tone for their triumph. While Maximillian Philip managed to pull one back for Dortmund, Mainz’s defense held firm to preserve their lead.
The victory propelled Mainz to a total of 36 points from 33 matches, securing the 14th spot in the 18-team Bundesliga table. This accomplishment places them six points clear of the relegation zone, with Wolfsburg currently occupying the 16th position.
Balogun, who has recently recovered from a rib injury, conveyed his emotions on Twitter, reflecting on the challenges faced throughout the season and expressing gratitude to everyone involved in the club’s success.
“What a way to save the league!!! It was a hard season with a lot of ups and downs. This year definitely showed us that every single soul is needed to reach our goals. Congrats to the whole club, the team, the staff, the employees, family & friends, and of course the fans 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽,” Balogun tweeted.
As the Bundesliga season concludes, the question arises of Balogun’s future at the club, considering his contract is set to expire at the end of the current campaign. The coming weeks may shed light on the defender’s next move as Mainz reflects on their hard-fought survival in the German top flight.
