Barcelona avoid €57,809 registration fee in Rodri deal
Barcelona will not have to pay an additional €57,809 registration fee for Rodri, because the Spain midfielder had already been registered as a first-team player in La Liga before joining the Catalan club.
The detail, reported by Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, provides Barcelona with a small but significant financial saving in a transfer which has brought the club one of the most high-profile arrivals of the summer.
Rodri expressed his delight after arriving in the Catalan capital and thanked the Barcelona board for completing the move. He also pledged to give his best during the next four years of his contract, which runs until June 2030.
Barcelona have agreed to pay €60m as a fixed fee for the player, with a further €11m available in add-ons.
The registration rule behind the saving applies to players appearing in La Liga for the first time as members of a club’s senior squad. The Royal Spanish Football Federation charges an initial registration fee of €57,809, which is paid only once when a player is first registered with a senior team in the Spanish top flight.
In Rodri’s case, that charge was previously covered by Villarreal when the club promoted him to its first team. As a result, Barcelona will not have to pay it again following his move.
Atletico Madrid also benefited from the same rule when Rodri joined them a season after leaving Villarreal. The Madrid club did not need to pay a second initial registration fee, and Barcelona will now receive the same financial advantage.
The saving contrasts with the situation involving Barcelona’s other reported summer signings, Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi. Both players are due to enter La Liga for the first time in their careers, meaning the club will be required to pay the initial registration charge for each of them.
Barcelona will therefore owe €57,809 for Gordon and the same amount for Adeyemi when their moves are formally registered in La Liga. The total cost of those two registrations will be €115,618.
That means Rodri’s previous experience as a registered first-team player in Spain has spared Barcelona the fee that will apply to Gordon and Adeyemi, while also ensuring Villarreal and Atletico Madrid had already dealt with the one-off charge during earlier stages of the midfielder’s career.
The registration issue is separate from the transfer agreement itself. Barcelona’s deal for Rodri remains valued at €60m in guaranteed payments, potentially rising by €11m through variables, with the player committed to the club until the end of June 2030.
