Bellingham faces possible FIFA probe after post-match clash in England’s World Cup heartbreak

Jude Bellingham could face disciplinary action from FIFA after TV cameras caught the England midfielder appearing to slap the back of an Argentina player’s head in the immediate aftermath of the 2026 World Cup semi-final in Atlanta.
England were knocked out 2-1 by Argentina, conceding twice in the closing stages to miss out on a place in the final. Argentina will now meet Spain in what is expected to be a blockbuster decider, while England are due to play France in the third-place play-off.
Flashpoint after final whistle
As Argentina’s players celebrated their late turnaround at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, footage showed Bellingham making contact with the back of substitute Valentin Barco’s head with what appeared to be a light slap.
Players and staff from both sides quickly stepped in to separate the pair and defuse the situation.
Video clips published by Spanish newspaper AS showed Bellingham and the Argentina player continuing to exchange words before they were moved away from each other. The match officials, led by referee Ismail Elfath, did not appear to witness the incident at the time and no action was taken on the field.
The circulating footage does not clarify whether any provocative remarks or actions from Barco preceded Bellingham’s response.
FIFA weighing disciplinary options
According to British newspaper The Sun, the incident may prompt FIFA to launch a disciplinary investigation, potentially leaving Bellingham at risk of a ban that could rule him out of England’s third-place match against France.
Possible sanctions range from a suspension to a financial penalty. The report suggested world football’s governing body might ultimately decide against imposing a ban and could limit any punishment to a fine, possibly with a suspended element.
FIFA has not yet issued any official comment on the matter.
England’s anguish and rising tensions
The semi-final defeat revived painful memories for England supporters, echoing the late collapse against Croatia at the 2018 World Cup that denied the “Three Lions” a place in the final.
The emotional toll on Gareth Southgate’s squad was evident at full-time. Bellingham, one of England’s standout performers in the tournament and a star for Real Madrid, was visibly distraught and in tears as the reality of missing the World Cup final sank in.
The tension extended beyond the Bellingham-Barco clash. Several confrontations broke out between players from both teams in the centre circle shortly after the whistle.
Morgan Rogers was involved in one of the flare-ups, while substitute goalkeeper Dean Henderson tried to act as a peacemaker. Referee Elfath moved quickly to escort the England player away from the confrontation in an attempt to restore calm.
Players step in to calm tempers
England goalkeeper James Trafford and forward Ivan Toney were also seen intervening to cool tempers as emotions ran high.
Rogers appeared to move towards Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez before being blocked, and he seemed to become embroiled in a heated exchange with Argentina’s substitute goalkeeper Juan Musso.
Earlier, before the main altercation, Bellingham had been seen consoling team-mate Nico O’Reilly on the pitch, offering support in the immediate aftermath of the defeat. He then walked towards the area where the arguments were breaking out, apparently to back up his team-mates amid the chaotic scenes.
England now face an anxious wait to discover whether their midfield talisman will be available for the play-off against France, as FIFA reviews footage of a night that brought both high drama and deep frustration for the Three Lions.
