Bellingham urges England to ‘stay united’ after heartbreaking World Cup exit to Argentina

Jude Bellingham has called on England fans to preserve the “unity and love” shown during the 2026 World Cup, after the team’s agonising late defeat to Argentina ended their dreams of lifting the trophy.

England were minutes away from reaching the World Cup final in the United States, leading 1-0 until the 85th minute, before the reigning champions struck twice to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory and knock Gareth Southgate’s side out.

Bellingham, who was one of the standout performers of the tournament, took to Instagram to share his emotions in the aftermath of the semi-final loss – and to deliver a broader message to supporters at home and abroad.

‘Unity and love’ must not end with tournament

Bellingham admitted he struggled to put his feelings into words following the defeat, but said a remark from a team bus driver in Kansas had captured everything he wanted to say.

He wrote: “كنت اواجه صعوبة كبيرة في العثور على الكلمات المناسبة للتعبير عما اشعر به، لكن ما قاله سايق حافلتنا في كانساس، يلخص كل شيء تماما”.

The Real Madrid midfielder went on to thank fans both in England and those who travelled across the Atlantic to follow the team throughout the tournament in the United States.

Bellingham then urged that the sense of togetherness that built around the national team over the course of the World Cup should endure beyond the final whistle.

England’s late collapse against champions

England’s exit came in painful fashion after they had appeared to manage the game effectively against the defending world champions.

Southgate’s side took a 1-0 lead and held it deep into the second half, keeping Argentina at bay until the final minutes. But a late surge from the title holders turned the match on its head, with two goals after the 85th minute securing a comeback win and a place in the final.

The defeat extended England’s wait for a first World Cup triumph since 1966, having now suffered a series of near-misses at major tournaments under Southgate, including the Euro 2020 final loss on penalties to Italy and previous World Cup knockout exits.

Standout tournament for Bellingham

Despite the disappointment, Bellingham’s individual campaign will be remembered as one of the brightest in an England shirt at a World Cup.

The 23-year-old scored six goals and provided one assist during the 2026 finals, driving England’s midfield with a combination of energy, technique and leadership that underlined his status as one of the world’s leading footballers.

His performances were central to England’s progress deep into the tournament and strengthened his reputation after an already stellar season at club level.

As the squad prepares to return home, Bellingham’s message places the focus not only on what happened on the pitch, but on the bond between the team and their supporters – a relationship he clearly hopes will help fuel future attempts to finally end England’s long World Cup wait.
