FIFA appoints Slovenia’s Slavko Vincic to referee 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina

Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic has been chosen by FIFA to take charge of the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, becoming the first match official from his country to oversee football’s biggest game.

The showpiece will be played on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, with Vincic leading an international officiating team that includes European and Arab officials.

Historic first for Slovenian referee

FIFA confirmed that Vincic, 46, will referee the final, assisted on the touchlines by compatriots Tomaz Klancnik and Andraz Kovacic.

His appointment marks a milestone for Slovenian football: Vincic will be the first Slovenian in history to referee a World Cup final, and the 23rd referee overall to officiate the decider since the tournament began in 1930.

Born on 25 November 1979, Vincic is regarded as one of UEFA’s most respected and experienced referees, regularly handling high-profile matches in European competitions and international fixtures.

Arab officials handed key roles

The refereeing crew for the final will also feature two Jordanians in prominent supporting roles.

Adham Makhadmeh has been named as the fourth official for the match, with his compatriot Mohammed Alkalaf appointed as the reserve assistant referee.

Their selection adds a notable Arab presence to the officiating team for the sport’s most watched match, underlining FIFA’s efforts to assemble a diverse and internationally representative crew for the final.

Fourth match of this World Cup for Vincic

The 2026 final will be Vincic’s fourth assignment at this edition of the World Cup.

He has already overseen three games in the tournament: Brazil v Morocco, Algeria v Jordan, and Mexico v Ecuador. His performances in those fixtures are understood to have strengthened his case for being handed the final.

Referee observers and governing bodies typically look for consistency, calm decision‐making and control of high-pressure encounters when selecting officials for the latter stages of major tournaments. Vincic’s track record at UEFA level and his handling of matches in this World Cup appear to have convinced FIFA’s referees committee.

Shadow of past Champions League controversy

Despite his strong reputation, Vincic is no stranger to controversy.

Last season he was at the centre of a major talking point in the UEFA Champions League, when he issued a red card to France international Eduardo Camavinga of Real Madrid during the second leg of the quarter-final against Bayern Munich in April.

The dismissal came after Vincic showed Camavinga a second yellow card for delaying the restart of play. Many observers and pundits described the decision as excessively harsh and ill-timed, arguing that it had a decisive impact on the match.

Following the sending-off, momentum swung away from Real Madrid, who were subsequently eliminated from the competition.

Alvaro Arbeloa, Real Madrid’s coach at the time, launched a scathing public attack on the referee’s handling of the situation, insisting that the decision had ruined the spectacle. He said the call had:

“افسد المباراة”

The incident reignited debate over refereeing standards in major European competitions and placed Vincic under intense scrutiny. Nonetheless, FIFA’s decision to entrust him with the World Cup final suggests full confidence in his ability to manage the highest-pressure environment in world football.

Spotlight on officials as Spain face Argentina

With Spain and Argentina preparing for one of the most anticipated World Cup finals in recent memory, the performance of Vincic and his team will be closely watched.

MetLife Stadium, located in East Rutherford, New Jersey, is expected to be at full capacity, with millions more tuning in across the globe. For Vincic, it will be the defining assignment of his career, as he steps into the global spotlight to oversee the match that will crown the next world champions.
