Burkina Faso Crush Flying Eagles, End Nigeria’s U-20 World Cup Hopes
Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have been knocked out of the race for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup after suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the final of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship.
The defeat at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, also ended Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The WAFU Zone B final was crucial, as the winner secured the region’s qualification ticket for the 2027 U-20 AFCON, which will serve as the pathway to the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Burkina Faso made their intentions clear from the start, scoring three goals within the opening 15 minutes to put the Flying Eagles in serious trouble.
Nigeria struggled to contain the Young Stallions’ attacking pressure and went into halftime facing a commanding deficit.
Coach Abdu Maikaba’s side tried to fight back after the restart, but they were unable to produce the goals needed to revive their hopes of completing a comeback.
Burkina Faso eventually added a fourth goal before Nigeria managed to score a consolation, but the late response did little to change the outcome as the Young Stallions secured a convincing victory.
The defeat was a particularly painful one for Nigeria, who had already lost 2-0 to Burkina Faso in the group stage.
The Flying Eagles had entered the final hoping to avenge that earlier defeat, but Burkina Faso once again proved too strong when it mattered most.
Nigeria booked their place in the final after a dramatic semi-final against hosts Côte d’Ivoire. The encounter ended 2-2 after regulation time before the Flying Eagles won 4-3 on penalties.
Burkina Faso, meanwhile, maintained their unbeaten run with a 2-0 semi-final victory over Niger.
The Young Stallions capped an impressive campaign by defeating Nigeria 4-1 to win the WAFU Zone B U-20 title and secure qualification for the 2027 U-20 AFCON.
For Nigeria, the result represents a major setback. The seven-time U-20 AFCON champions will miss the 2027 continental tournament and, as a result, lose the opportunity to qualify for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup through the competition.
