Rivers United Close Gap on Barau FC as NPFL Top Three Separated by One Point

Rivers United have moved into second place in the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), leaving only one point between the top three after five matches.

The Pride of Rivers have 11 points, one behind leaders Barau FC, who have collected 12 points from six games. Plateau United are also on 11 points but sit third because their goal difference is inferior to that of Rivers United.

Rivers United’s goal difference is +9, compared with Plateau United’s +3. They remain unbeaten and have combined a strong defensive display with an attack that has regularly produced goals.

Their position was strengthened by a 5–0 win against Kun Khalifat in Week 5. The emphatic result significantly improved their goal difference and lifted them above Plateau United in the standings.

Barau FC continue to lead the table, although their advantage has been cut to a single point. The Kano-based club have played one match more than Rivers United, increasing the pressure on them as the unbeaten second-placed side continues to close the gap.

Rivers United’s outstanding fixture could have a further effect on the shape of the table if they maintain their current form.

Plateau United remain within reach of the leaders despite falling to third. The Jos-based club have the same number of points as Rivers United but trail them by six goals on goal difference, underlining the importance of early-season results in such a tightly packed table.

Three-way contest develops

The opening stages of the season have produced a three-way battle at the top of the NPFL, with just one point separating Barau FC, Rivers United and Plateau United.

Barau FC hold first place, Rivers United possess the only unbeaten record among the leading sides and have the best goal difference, while Plateau United remain close enough to challenge for the summit.

There is still a considerable part of the campaign to play, but the early standings have already created a closely fought contest for first place. Rivers United’s game in hand means the race could become even tighter once their outstanding fixture is completed.
