CAF appoints new head of competitions to replace Samson Adamu

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Egyptian football administrator Khaled Nassar as head of its Competitions Department, replacing Nigeria’s Samson Adamu, who recently became the acting General Secretary of the continental governing body.
Nassar’s appointment follows Adamu’s elevation to the General Secretariat after the resignation of Véron Mosengo-Omba of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Adamu previously headed CAF’s Competitions Department, overseeing the coordination and administration of major football tournaments across Africa.
His move to the acting General Secretary position created a vacancy, paving the way for Nassar to assume responsibility for the department.
In his new role, Nassar is expected to oversee the planning, coordination and administration of CAF’s competitions, including tournaments involving national teams and clubs across the continent.
The Competitions Department plays a central role in CAF’s operations, with responsibilities ranging from scheduling matches and managing tournament logistics to coordinating with host associations, participating teams, match officials and other stakeholders.
His appointment comes as CAF continues preparations for its forthcoming competitions, with the department expected to ensure that tournaments are organised in line with established plans and regulations.
However, details regarding the effective date of Nassar’s appointment and any immediate changes to the department’s operations were not provided in the report.
Adamu’s departure from the Competitions Department follows his appointment as acting General Secretary after Mosengo-Omba’s resignation.
The Nigerian administrator previously played a significant role in coordinating CAF’s competitions, placing him at the centre of the organisation’s tournament operations.
His new assignment represents a shift from overseeing competitions to handling broader administrative responsibilities within the continental governing body.
As acting General Secretary, Adamu is expected to support the implementation of CAF policies and coordinate its day-to-day administrative activities.
Nassar’s appointment comes as CAF manages an extensive calendar of club and national-team tournaments across Africa.
His immediate responsibility will be to ensure continuity in the Competitions Department following Adamu’s transition, while maintaining the organisational standards required for the smooth delivery of CAF events.
The change also highlights the movement of administrators between key positions as CAF manages its leadership structure and operational responsibilities.
No specific policy changes or new competition plans were announced alongside Nassar’s appointment, with attention now turning to how the Egyptian administrator settles into his new role ahead of CAF’s upcoming tournaments.
