FIFA gives African teams technical advise ahead of 2030 FIFA World Cup

FIFA’s Technical Study Group has identified four key areas African national teams must address to improve their chances of competing more effectively at the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The technical assessment highlights the need for greater attacking precision, improved high pressing, smarter game management and the preservation of Africa’s traditional football strengths.

The recommendations are aimed at helping African sides overcome tactical shortcomings that could undermine their performances against elite opposition on the global stage.

One of the major concerns raised by the experts is the tendency to rely excessively on long range attempts instead of creating clear cut scoring opportunities inside the penalty area.

FIFA’s technical group believes African teams must improve their ability to penetrate defensive lines, manufacture chances in dangerous areas and convert those opportunities into goals.

The experts also stressed that winning possession higher up the pitch through effective pressing could provide teams with more opportunities to attack before opponents recover their defensive shape.

Game management was another significant area identified, particularly when teams are protecting narrow leads in the closing stages of matches.

According to the technical analysis, late concessions are not necessarily the result of poor physical conditioning, as tactical indiscipline, careless possession and poor decision-making can also contribute. African teams have therefore been urged to exercise greater composure under pressure and make better decisions when attempting to see out important results.

Despite the areas requiring improvement, FIFA’s technical experts advised African nations against abandoning the qualities that have traditionally made them difficult opponents, including defensive discipline, set-piece effectiveness, resilience and mental strength.

With the 2030 World Cup on the horizon, the challenge for African football authorities and coaches will be to combine these established attributes with greater tactical sophistication and attacking efficiency.

Success in implementing the recommendations could strengthen Africa’s capacity to compete more consistently with the world’s leading football nations
