Chelle plans youth-to-Super Eagles pathway in Nigeria overhaul

Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle says he will monitor players from the U-17 and U-20 national teams as part of a long-term plan to strengthen the country’s Olympic team and senior side.

The Franco-Malian coach outlined his vision during a visit to the Flying Eagles camp at the ongoing WAFU-B U-20 Championship in Cote d’Ivoire. His approach represents a shift in how Nigeria’s national teams could be developed, with the foundations of the Super Eagles potentially being laid several years before players receive their first senior call-up.

Chelle’s responsibilities, he indicated, will extend beyond selecting a squad for the next Super Eagles fixture. Instead, he wants to follow the progress of Nigeria’s most promising players from the youth ranks and create a closer link between the country’s age-group teams and the senior national side.

The coach visited the Flying Eagles to offer encouragement while also assessing some of the young players involved in the regional competition. He said he was pleased by what he saw and hoped to return to watch the team again later in the tournament.

His presence at the camp highlighted the growing connection between Nigeria’s youth teams and the Super Eagles, an integration that has long been sought by stakeholders in Nigerian football.

Chelle’s plan is not limited to established players based in Europe. He intends to widen his focus to the development teams, with the belief that a successful senior national side must be built from the youth level upwards.

Monitoring players from the U-17 and U-20 teams would allow Chelle to track their development before they become recognised names. It would also help him build a more consistent pathway into Nigeria’s U-23 team and the senior national side.

The aim is to create continuity across the different age groups, allowing players to develop within a shared football philosophy and making the eventual move into senior international football more straightforward.

Nigeria has a strong history of producing leading African footballers through its youth system. Players who represented the Golden Eaglets and the Flying Eagles have gone on to make an impact on the global stage and become important figures for the Super Eagles.

Chelle now appears determined to reinforce that route by maintaining close contact with emerging players rather than waiting until they have established themselves abroad. His decision to visit the Flying Eagles at the WAFU-B U-20 Championship is a further indication that youth development will play a central role in his tenure.

The coach’s success may therefore be judged not only by immediate results with the Super Eagles, but also by the quality of the players coming through to the senior team.

By beginning his wider project with the U-17 and U-20 national teams, Chelle is laying the groundwork for what he hopes will be a sustainable future for Nigerian football. His objective is not simply to identify the next Super Eagles squad, but to help develop the next generation of Nigerian stars.
