Club Brugge agree deal for West Ham United midfielder Freddie Potts

Club Brugge have made West Ham United midfielder Freddie Potts their preferred replacement for Raphael Onyedika, who is set to join Eintracht Frankfurt in a deal worth an initial €9m.

The Belgian champions have reached an agreement worth about €12m for Potts, according to transfer market expert Sacha Tavolieri, and the 22-year-old has given the move his approval.

Potts is expected to arrive at Club Brugge’s training camp this afternoon for a medical. If he passes the examination, the English defensive midfielder will be in line to complete his move to the Blauw & Zwart.

The transfer is being arranged as Club Brugge prepare for Onyedika’s departure. The Nigeria international is close to completing a permanent switch to Eintracht Frankfurt after the clubs reached a full agreement over the deal.

According to Sky transfer expert Florian Plettenberg, Eintracht Frankfurt will pay €9m up front for Onyedika, with further performance-related add-ons included in the transfer package.

Onyedika, 25, is expected to sign a contract keeping him with the Bundesliga club until 2031. He and his representatives have formally informed all parties of their decision to proceed with the move, removing a significant obstacle to its completion.

The Super Eagles midfielder is expected to undergo his medical within the next 48 hours before signing a five-year contract with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Club Brugge’s decision to move quickly for Potts reflects the need to fill the midfield position that will be left vacant by Onyedika. The Belgian side have identified the West Ham United player as their leading candidate and have already received his agreement to the proposed transfer.

Potts is therefore set to become the immediate focus of Club Brugge’s recruitment activity, with his medical representing the next step in the process. The planned move remains dependent on that examination and the completion of the formal paperwork.

Onyedika’s transfer to Eintracht Frankfurt is also progressing towards its final stages. The agreement includes a guaranteed €9m payment for Club Brugge, while the additional clauses could increase the overall value of the deal depending on the player’s performances.

The midfielder’s expected contract would keep him at Eintracht Frankfurt until 2031, following a move that has been approved by the player and his representatives. His medical is scheduled to take place in the next 48 hours, after which he is expected to put pen to paper.

With both transfers advancing, Club Brugge are close to replacing Onyedika before his move to Germany is completed. Potts has already authorised his switch from West Ham United and is due to report for his medical at the Belgian club’s training camp this afternoon.
