Crystal Palace weigh move for Trabzonspor defender Nwaiwu as Lacroix nears Chelsea switch

Crystal Palace have stepped up their search for a new centre-back and are assessing a move for Trabzonspor defender Chibuike Nwaiwu, with Maxence Lacroix expected to join Chelsea this summer.

The UEFA Conference League holders are in the market for defensive reinforcements ahead of the new campaign, as Lacroix is understood to be closing in on a transfer to Stamford Bridge.

Nwaiwu, who joined Trabzonspor in the winter transfer window, has rapidly become one of the most in-demand Nigerian defenders in Europe after a standout half-season in the Turkish Super Lig.

The 22-year-old has impressed with his calmness in possession, physical strength and reliability at the heart of the Trabzonspor back line, quickly establishing himself as a regular starter for the club.

His form in Turkey earned him a first call-up to the Super Eagles earlier this year, and he made his senior international debut in March 2026, playing in Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Iran.

Those performances have prompted interest from several European sides, and there is growing uncertainty around his long-term future at Trabzonspor as the 2026-27 season approaches.

Fulham face fresh competition

Fulham are among the clubs most strongly linked with Nwaiwu and are believed to have made significant progress in their pursuit.

Reports suggest the defender has already reached a verbal agreement on personal terms with the Premier League club, indicating he is open to a move to Craven Cottage.

However, Fulham have yet to strike a deal with Trabzonspor over a transfer fee, and talks between the two clubs are said to be ongoing.

That delay has left the door open for other suitors, with Crystal Palace now emerging as a serious contender for his signature.

Transfer specialist Florian Plettenberg reports that Palace have added Nwaiwu to their list of defensive options under consideration during the current window.

Matsima remains Palace priority

Despite their interest in Nwaiwu, Palace are believed to be prioritising a move for Augsburg defender Chrislain Matsima.

The South London club are understood to see Matsima as their first-choice target to strengthen central defence as they prepare for life without Lacroix.

If a deal for Matsima fails to materialise, Palace are expected to turn their attention more firmly towards Nwaiwu and could intensify efforts to sign the Nigerian before the transfer deadline.

With Premier League interest increasing and negotiations ongoing in the background, Nwaiwu is likely to seek clarity over his next move before the start of the 2026-27 campaign as he looks to continue his development at the highest level.
