Super Falcons unveil unprecedented 10-star kit for WAFCON title defence
Nigeria’s Super Falcons will defend their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations crown in a landmark 10-star jersey at WAFCON 2026, underlining their status as the dominant force in African women’s football.
The new shirt carries 10 stars, each marking one of Nigeria’s record 10 WAFCON titles. It makes the Super Falcons the first African national team – men’s or women’s – to wear a jersey featuring 10 stars in recognition of continental triumphs.
The kit received its first outing on Thursday night in Casablanca, where Justine Madugu’s side defeated Tanzania’s Twiga Stars 2-1 in a friendly, giving supporters an early look at the historic design ahead of the tournament.
Nigeria chase record-extending 11th continental crown
The Super Falcons arrive in Morocco as defending champions and will be targeting an 11th WAFCON title to extend their remarkable legacy in the competition.
Head coach Madugu leads a squad expected to contend strongly again in a tournament they have long dominated, having won more titles than any other nation in the competition’s history.
The 2026 edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations kicks off on Sunday, with 16 teams involved in the battle for continental honours and qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Route to the knockouts
Nigeria begin their title defence on Tuesday against Malawi, who are making their first-ever appearance at the tournament. That Group C opener will be played at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat.
The Super Falcons have also been drawn against Zambia and Egypt in the same group as they seek to navigate the opening phase and set up another deep run on the continental stage.
Group C is expected to provide a variety of tests, with Nigeria facing a debutant in Malawi as well as more established sides in Zambia and Egypt, all of whom will be looking to upset the champions.
Symbol of supremacy
For Nigeria, the 10 stars stitched above their crest serve not only as a record of past success but also as a visible statement of their ambitions going into WAFCON 2026.
Those titles have established the Super Falcons as the benchmark in African women’s football, and the new jersey is intended to reflect a level of sustained excellence unmatched across the continent.
With the competition about to start, the focus now shifts from symbolism to performance, as Madugu’s team look to ensure that the next time a star is added to the shirt, it will be for lifting an 11th WAFCON trophy in Morocco.
