Cucurella revives cheeky Haaland chant as Spain’s World Cup party stirs Norwegian media storm

Marc Cucurella has reignited his now-famous chant about Erling Haaland during Spain’s World Cup celebrations in Madrid – a playful jibe that has once again gone viral and triggered widespread coverage in Norway.

The Chelsea defender grabbed the microphone on the victory stage in the Spanish capital and bellowed to the crowd: “Haaland is shaking!”, prompting thousands of fans to roar back the established response: “Because Cucurella is coming!”

The exchange, lifted straight from a tongue‐in‐cheek song first heard this summer, added a comic twist to Spain’s homecoming festivities as newly crowned world champions, but also ensured that the running “feud” between Cucurella and Manchester City’s star striker remains firmly in the spotlight.

Chant dates back to Euro 2024 triumph

Cucurella originally unveiled a longer version of the song in the wake of Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, when the full-back emerged as one of the team’s breakout personalities as well as a key performer on the pitch.

That earlier performance did not go unnoticed by Haaland. Barely a month later, the Norwegian forward found his own way of answering back, scoring in the first club match in which he and Cucurella faced each other after the tournament.

Speaking after that game, Haaland responded with a shrug and a smile, making clear he was not offended by the routine. “Cucurella is a funny guy; last season he asked me for my shirt, and this summer he sings a song about me… it really doesn’t bother me,” the striker said.

‘A tribute, not an insult’

As the chant gained traction on social media following Euro 2024, Cucurella moved to explain that the whole idea had been intended as a compliment to Haaland rather than a slight.

He stressed that having a song written about a player is, in his view, reserved for footballers who have reached true global‐star status.

According to Cucurella, the song was “in reality a tribute and praise” of Haaland’s level, and he pointed out that no one would ever think to compose a chant around “an unknown player”. The Norwegian, he argued, is singled out precisely because he is “a world‐class, one‐of‐a‐kind” talent.

The Spaniard also insisted at the time that he had no regrets whatsoever about launching the chant – and that he was perfectly willing to belt it out again in the future.

By repeating the line on the World Cup winners’ stage in Madrid, he has now kept that promise.

Norwegian media seize on ‘Haaland song’ sequel

Cucurella’s latest rendition did not go unnoticed in Norway, where Haaland is the undisputed face of the national team and one of the country’s biggest sporting icons.

Norwegian outlets gave the episode prominent treatment, with the public broadcaster NRK splashing a leading headline on its main page that read: “Cucurella sings about Haaland… again”.

The renewed attention underscores how even light-hearted player banter can quickly become an international talking point when it involves one of world football’s most prolific forwards.

For now, the back‐and‐forth remains firmly in the realm of friendly rivalry: Cucurella continues to lean into his role as the joker with a microphone, while Haaland, by his own account, is happy to let the song play on.
