Emotional Tolu Arokodare thanks Osimhen for cameo winning Super Eagles debut

By Monsurah Olatunji

Nigeria international Tolu Arokodare has opened up about the emotional moment he experienced after making his debut for the Super Eagles in Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Rwanda in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Friday.

Arokodare, who has been in exceptional form with Genk this season, came on as a substitute for Victor Osimhen in the dying minutes of the match in Kigali, marking a significant milestone in his career.

The 24-year-old striker, overwhelmed by the achievement of finally playing for Nigeria’s senior team, broke down in tears.

In what was a deeply emotional moment for the Genk striker, Arokodare was caught shedding tears while celebrating Nigeria’s first victory in the qualifying series. His tears were not just from the excitement of the win, but from the realization of fulfilling a long-time dream of playing for his country.

Speaking after the match, Arokodare shared the personal significance of the moment, explaining why he became so emotional. “What a lot of people don’t know is I started crying when I hugged [Victor] Osimhen because I hugged him and said ‘thank you,’” Arokodare revealed in a video by OJB Sports.

He continued, “I said in an interview he’s played a huge role in my career and life.”

Arokodare’s journey has been nothing short of impressive. With 19 goals and six assists in 35 appearances this season, he has established himself as one of Europe’s top Nigerian strikers, ranking third behind Cyriel Dessers (22) and Osimhen (26).

Arokodare’s debut marks the beginning of what could be a bright international career, with many fans excited to see how he will contribute to Nigeria’s World Cup aspirations.
