Flying Eagles need draw against Burkina Faso to top WAFU B U-20 Championship group

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will secure top spot in Group B of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship with a draw against Burkina Faso in their final group-stage match on Sunday.

The defending champions have already qualified for the semi-finals after winning both of their opening fixtures, but they need to avoid defeat against the Young Stallions to finish first in the section.

Abdu Maikaba’s side opened their title defence with a 4-2 victory over arch-rivals Ghana. They followed that result with a more comfortable 3-0 win against Togo, giving Nigeria a perfect six points from two matches.

Those results have placed the Flying Eagles at the top of Group B and put them in a strong position ahead of their final game. A point against Burkina Faso would be enough to confirm their status as group winners and send them into the semi-finals at the head of the standings.

A win would give Nigeria a third successive victory in the competition and preserve their unbeaten run as they continue their attempt to defend the regional title successfully.

Burkina Faso also enter the match without defeat. The Young Stallions began their campaign with a victory over Togo before drawing with Ghana. Their four points from two matches leave them second in Group B and still in contention for qualification from the group.

The result means Sunday’s meeting carries significance for both teams, although Nigeria have already secured their place in the last four. The Flying Eagles’ priority will be to complete the group stage in first place, while Burkina Faso will look to build on their unbeaten start.

Nigeria’s six-point advantage at the top means they do not need another victory to achieve that objective. However, a draw would guarantee first place, while success against Burkina Faso would provide further momentum for Maikaba’s team before the semi-finals.

The match will conclude the Flying Eagles’ Group B campaign in this year’s WAFU B U-20 Championship. Nigeria’s opening wins over Ghana and Togo have placed them in control of the group, and their final fixture offers an opportunity to finish the first stage with a perfect record.

For the defending champions, the encounter is therefore both a test of their title credentials and a chance to maintain the form that has taken them through to the knockout phase. Burkina Faso, unbeaten after two matches, will provide the final challenge as Nigeria seek to confirm top spot.
