France players ‘angered’ by Deschamps midfield call after World Cup semi-final loss to Spain

Spain’s demolition of France in the World Cup semi-final has sparked internal anger in the French camp, with several senior players reportedly blaming one key tactical decision by coach Didier Deschamps for the defeat.
Spain outplayed France across the 90 minutes to reach the final, despite pre-match predictions heavily favouring Les Bleus, who boast some of the world’s biggest stars. But it was the collective strength and organisation of Luis de la Fuente’s side that prevailed, as they nullified France’s main threats and took control of the game.
According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, citing French sports daily L’Equipe, tensions erupted in the French dressing room after the match, with a number of players unhappy over Deschamps’ choices in midfield.
Dressing room tension over Tchouameni decision
The reports claim that many France players were left baffled by Deschamps’ decision to start Aurelien Tchouameni and to keep him on the pitch for the second half, while withdrawing Adrien Rabiot at the end of the first period.
Most of the squad are said to have questioned the logic of that call, believing it weakened France’s midfield structure and helped Spain seize the initiative.
Players reportedly viewed the move as a decisive tactical error which “perhaps directly contributed” to Spain gaining superiority in the match. That dominance allowed De la Fuente’s team to impose their rhythm, control possession and deliver the performance that sent them into the World Cup final.
Players felt Rabiot ‘offered more’ than Tchouameni
The discontent inside the France camp centres on the perception that Rabiot was outperforming Tchouameni on the night and should have remained on the field.
The decision generated “a feeling of dissatisfaction” within the squad, with several players believing Rabiot’s continued presence would have given France greater balance and stability in central midfield against a technically strong Spanish side.
Spain’s ability to overwhelm France in key phases of the match has been widely praised, with the European side lauded for their cohesive, collective approach in contrast to France’s reliance on individual talent.
Questions mount over Deschamps’ big-game management
The fallout from the defeat has not been limited to the 90 minutes in which Spain dominated. The repercussions have continued in the French camp as Deschamps prepares his team to face England in the third-place play-off.
L’Equipe reports that the loss has intensified scrutiny of Deschamps’ tactical choices and his management of high-stakes knockout games at this tournament. The midfield reshuffle against Spain has become a focal point for wider doubts about his decision-making.
With France now out of the title race and reduced to contesting third place, questions are growing over whether different selections – particularly in midfield – might have produced a more competitive display against a Spain side that appeared sharper, more cohesive and more tactically assured throughout the semi-final.
