“I don’t rate him as a captain” – John Obi Mikel questions Bruno Fernandes’ captaincy

Former Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi has expressed skepticism about Bruno Fernandes’ suitability as Manchester United’s captain.

Mikel, who captained the Nigerian national team, questioned Fernandes’ effectiveness in the leadership role.

Fernandes took over the captaincy from Harry Maguire at the start of the 2023 season. Under his leadership, Manchester United won the FA Cup, but his tenure has faced criticism.

Earlier this month, Fernandes committed his future to the club by signing a new contract, continuing to play a central role under manager Erik ten Hag.

Discussing Fernandes as a pundit on BeIN Sports Premier League broadcast, Mikel shared his views.

“For me, as a player, I rate him, but I don’t rate him as a world-class player,” Mikel said. “I rate him but I don’t rate him as a captain. For me, I don’t think he’s a Manchester United captain.”
