Jamie Carragher pokes fun at Gary Neville’s outfit during Sky Sports’ live return
Jamie Carragher left viewers laughing after teasing former Manchester United defender Gary Neville about his choice of clothing during the opening edition of Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football this season.
The two long-serving pundits were back on screen for the first programme of the new campaign, but the discussion took an unexpected turn when Carragher focused on Neville’s outfit rather than the football.
Carragher, 48, reportedly asked: “Can I add one more to watch?”
The former Liverpool defender then turned towards Neville and pointed at his trousers before adding: “Are you going to wear those trousers again?”
Neville laughed at the remark and explained that he had deliberately chosen a loose-fitting pair.
Carragher continued the joke by comparing his colleague’s appearance to former footballer Frank Worthington.
“He looks like Frank Worthington,” Carragher said.
Neville, 51, responded by suggesting that Carragher would eventually adopt the same style.
“You’ll find that Carragher will start wearing these shoes in two or three years. He’ll catch up,” the former Manchester United player said.
Neville then stood up to give viewers a better look at his trousers and defended his decision.
“I went shopping on Saturday in London. This man styled my clothes… I’ll tell you what, they’re really good. I’m impressed with them,” he said.
Carragher was not finished, however, and delivered another pointed remark about Neville’s footwear.
“What are those shoes? Are they Polo shoes?” he asked.
The exchange prompted laughter in the studio, but Neville’s outfit also attracted attention from viewers watching at home. Several fans used social media to comment on his baggy trousers during the programme.
One wrote: “Gary Neville… those trousers.”
Another posted: “But I’m not a fan of Neville’s trousers.”
A third viewer said: “I’ve only just noticed Gary Neville’s trousers during the American football match and I can’t focus on anything else now.”
Carragher and Neville have regularly shared the Sky Sports studio as pundits, with their contrasting backgrounds providing a familiar source of debate and banter. Carragher spent his entire senior playing career with Liverpool, while Neville was a key figure for Manchester United before moving into broadcasting.
Their latest exchange came as Monday Night Football returned for its first show of the season. What began as a discussion point quickly became a light-hearted assessment of Neville’s fashion choices, with Carragher repeatedly drawing attention to his colleague’s trousers and shoes.
The response online suggested that the former Liverpool defender was not alone in noticing Neville’s outfit, as supporters joined in with jokes about the unusually loose-fitting trousers.
