John Obi Mikel remains optimistic about Super Eagles’ World Cup qualification hopes

By Wale Mustapha

Former Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel has expressed strong belief that Nigeria can still qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite their precarious position in Group C.

Nigeria currently sits third in the group with 11 points from eight matches—trailing their rivals with just two crucial fixtures remaining in the qualification campaign.

The Super Eagles face Lesotho this Friday at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, South Africa, in what is widely regarded as a must-win match. They will then host Benin Republic next Tuesday in their final group-stage encounter.

Speaking on his ObiOne Podcast, Mikel urged the team to rise to the occasion and fight for national pride, calling for focus, character, and responsibility.

“It’s going to be a crime—an absolute crime—if Nigeria doesn’t make it to the World Cup again,” said the former Chelsea midfielder.

“We love our football too much. Our World Cup fate is in the players’ hands. They have to win these two games—no excuses.”

Mikel emphasized that, despite setbacks in the campaign, qualification remains achievable if the players commit fully to the task.

“The players have to step up, take full responsibility, and fight for the nation. The World Cup is still possible if they give everything in these last two games,” he added.

Having led Nigeria at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Mikel remains an influential voice in Nigerian football.

His confidence will offer encouragement to fans and players alike as the Super Eagles seek a seventh World Cup appearance.
