Kylian Mbappe apologises to Chinese people over controversial remarks

Kylian Mbappe has issued a formal apology after comments about a satirical image of the Chinese leader prompted a backlash in China.
The Real Madrid forward said he regretted remarks made during a recent interview, acknowledging that they had offended people in China and Chinese communities around the world.
“During a recent interview, I commented on a picture of myself, but my comment was inappropriate,” Mbappe said in a statement.
“I now realise that it hurt the feelings of many people in China and in Chinese communities around the world.
“I apologise to everyone who was upset by my words. That was absolutely not my intention. I have a deep respect for the Chinese people and their history, and I express my sincere regret.”
China’s state television broadcaster CCTV stopped showing Spanish league matches, as well as any games involving Mbappe, following the controversial comments.
Javier Tebas, president of La Liga, has also apologised to the Chinese people on behalf of the league.
Tebas said he was sorry for the offence and dissatisfaction caused by the player’s words, adding that La Liga was working with its partners in China to resolve the situation.
“We recognise the damage this matter has caused, and I would like, on behalf of La Liga, to offer our sincere apologies to the Chinese people,” Tebas wrote in a message published on his account on X.
He also highlighted the possible consequences for Spanish football as a whole, saying the incident should not damage the relationship between La Liga and China or affect clubs and supporters.
“We cannot allow an individual action to tarnish this relationship or harm more than 20 clubs who take part in our professional competitions, as well as millions of Chinese fans,” he added.
