Manchester United complete long-running deal for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba
Manchester United have announced the signing of Cameroon midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton, bringing an end to a lengthy period of negotiations during the current summer transfer window.
The Premier League club confirmed the move on its official website, stating that it had been completed “subject to registration procedures”. That step clears the way for Baleba to begin his Manchester United career once the formal registration process has been concluded.
Baleba, 22, has agreed a contract with Manchester United running until June 2031. The deal also includes an option allowing the club to extend his stay by a further season.
The midfielder arrives at Old Trafford after establishing himself as one of the most prominent players in his position in the Premier League. He made 31 Premier League appearances for Brighton last season, playing a significant role in the side’s campaign.
Manchester United highlighted Baleba’s statistical record in their announcement. During the 2024-25 season, he ranked sixth among Premier League midfielders for his combined total of tackles and interceptions. He was also fourth for forward carries per 90 minutes, reflecting his ability to move the ball up the pitch as well as contribute defensively.
Across the league as a whole, Baleba finished in the top 8% of players for combined tackles and interceptions last season. He was in the top 1% for recoveries of second balls, another indication of his effectiveness in winning possession after an initial contest.
His performances helped Brighton secure a position that qualified the club for the UEFA Conference League. Baleba’s contribution in midfield was central to the team’s efforts as they achieved a place in European competition.
The Cameroon international now joins Manchester United as the club look to strengthen their midfield ahead of the new season. His defensive work, ability to regain possession and willingness to carry the ball forward are expected to provide additional options in the centre of the pitch.
The announcement concludes a prolonged transfer process between Manchester United and Brighton. With the agreement now confirmed, subject to registration, Baleba is set to wear the Manchester United shirt for the first time and becomes part of the club’s plans for the upcoming campaign.
Manchester United hope the 22-year-old can build on the form that made him one of the Premier League’s leading young midfielders at Brighton. His long-term contract, with the possibility of an additional season, reflects the club’s intention to make him an important part of their midfield in the years ahead.
