Mbappe faces Vinicius comparison after narrow 2026 Ballon d’Or defeat

Kylian Mbappe’s defeat by Harry Kane in the 2026 Ballon d’Or has revived comparisons with Vinicius Junior’s loss to Rodri two years earlier, and renewed questions about whether missing out on football’s biggest individual prize can leave a lasting psychological effect.
Mbappe finished second behind Kane, with Lamine Yamal third, after a contest that was decided by a much smaller margin than the 2024 vote. In both cases, the disappointment went beyond simply failing to win: the races were extremely close, and the prize appeared within reach before the final votes went in favour of another player.
In 2024, Rodri beat Vinicius Junior by 41 points. The result prompted widespread debate, given the Brazilian’s season with Real Madrid and his contribution to the club winning both La Liga and the Champions League.
The controversy deepened when Vinicius and the Real Madrid delegation did not attend the ceremony. The club had received indications that its player would not win, turning the absence into a broader confrontation between Real Madrid and the award, as questions were raised about how the outcome had been handled.
Two years later, the circumstances were different for Mbappe. Vincent Garcia, editor-in-chief of France Football, said the contest between Kane and Mbappe was closer than the 2024 battle between Rodri and Vinicius. Garcia explained that Mbappe led the voting for a long period before Kane moved ahead in the final stages.
The reaction to the announcement also invited comparison. Mbappe and Lamine Yamal appeared surprised and disappointed as the result was revealed in front of the cameras. However, Mbappe attended the 2026 ceremony, unlike Vinicius in 2024.
Attendance alone does not show that Mbappe accepted the result more readily, just as Vinicius’ absence cannot by itself reveal his state of mind. Different considerations may have influenced whether each player attended, while a player’s expression during a live broadcast cannot fully explain what they are feeling.
Vinicius’ performance has remained under scrutiny since his defeat by Rodri, with criticism of his displays and influence at Real Madrid intensifying. His form has also been compared with what he produced in the seasons before the award, prompting repeated questions about whether the result affected him psychologically.
There is no clear answer. Any decline in performance cannot be attributed to one factor without firm evidence, particularly in football, where technical, physical and tactical issues overlap with the circumstances surrounding a player and his team. A sequence in which the award loss comes before poorer performances does not prove that the first caused the second.
Mbappe may nevertheless be better equipped to move on, given his competitive personality and long experience of dealing with pressure and high expectations at club and international level. It is possible to argue that he is mentally stronger than Vinicius and that the 2026 defeat will not affect him in the same way the 2024 result is believed to have affected the Brazilian.
That remains an assessment, not an established fact. Mental strength should be judged by what Mbappe does after the disappointment: how he responds to pressure, maintains his level and develops during the months ahead. He will also have plenty of future opportunities to challenge for the Ballon d’Or.
The lasting significance of this defeat will therefore be determined on the pitch, not by Mbappe’s expression on the night Kane won. The comparison with Vinicius highlights the narrow margins and potential burden of the award, but the real judgement will come from what follows the setback.
