Bursaspor talks with Henry Onyekuru: Nigerian winger cannot play until January

Bursaspor are in talks with former Everton and Galatasaray winger Henry Onyekuru, but Turkish registration rules mean the Nigerian cannot make an official appearance for the club before January.

Neither Bursaspor nor the 29-year-old has confirmed that an agreement has been reached. Reports emerged on 9 and 10 October, with the January transfer window now the key date if negotiations result in a contract.

Fanatik reported on 9 October that Bursaspor, who are challenging for the Trendyol 1. Lig title, had spoken to Onyekuru and made significant progress in discussions. However, the club is not understood to be rushing to complete the move.

The newspaper said Bursaspor were considering a contract covering the second half of the season, with an option to extend the agreement.

AfricaSoccer, citing Fotomac, reported on 10 October that Onyekuru is a free agent after leaving Genclerbirligi at the end of last season. He joined Genclerbirligi from Al Fayha in 2025 and made 19 appearances for the club, without scoring or providing an assist.

The two reports differ over Onyekuru’s precise contractual position. Fanatik said Bursaspor hold his registration rights, while AfricaSoccer described him as a free agent.

They do agree, however, that any deal completed now could not be registered until January. Onyekuru would be able to train with Bursaspor’s squad, but would not be eligible to play in an official match before the registration window opens.

Why a short-term agreement could suit both parties

A six-month contract, combined with an option to extend, would allow Bursaspor to assess Onyekuru during the second half of the season without making a lengthy commitment.

For the winger, the move would offer an opportunity to return to regular football following a difficult spell at Genclerbirligi, where he reportedly went through 19 matches without registering a goal or an assist.

Bursaspor could also provide a familiar setting for a Nigerian forward. Kelechi Iheanacho has scored 16 goals in 12 appearances for the club, a run highlighted by Soccernet in its coverage of his scoring record in Turkey.

Soccernet has also reported on Bursaspor’s interest in bringing in another Nigerian player.

Should Bursaspor and Onyekuru finalise an agreement, January will be the earliest possible date for his first official appearance.
