Monchi apologises to Espanyol fans after backing Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal for Ballon d’Or
Espanyol sporting director Monchi has apologised to the club’s supporters after choosing Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal as his preferred candidate for the Ballon d’Or.
Monchi made the comments about a week ago when asked to select his favourite from a shortlist featuring Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane and Yamal. His decision caused anger among some Espanyol supporters because of the intense rivalry between the two Catalan clubs.
Speaking to Cadena SER, Monchi explained that his choice was based on Yamal’s nationality.
“I was asked to choose between Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal, and I chose Yamal because he was the Spanish option,” he said.
The sporting director acknowledged that his answer had sparked controversy among Espanyol fans and issued an apology to anyone who had been offended.
“Of course, as an Espanyol supporter, I could have chosen someone else. I did not intend to cause offence,” Monchi said.
“I know what it means to be an Espanyol supporter. I have felt a sense of belonging to the club from the beginning, and if anyone felt insulted, I apologise.”
Monchi said his decision was intended to reflect his pride in Spain rather than a lack of loyalty to Espanyol.
“It was like wearing the Spanish flag,” he added.
