Mourinho masterplan exposes Barcelona’s flaws as Real Madrid win at Camp Nou

Real Madrid defeated Barcelona at Camp Nou on Sunday after Jose Mourinho’s tactical plan neutralised Hans Flick’s side and exposed weaknesses in the Catalan club’s game. The result cut Barcelona’s lead to three points and left them reviewing a second successive setback during a demanding week.

Barcelona lacked their usual fluency and pace, while their decision-making appeared increasingly affected by the pressure of facing opponents who understood how to exploit their weaknesses.

According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Barcelona’s high press was poorly executed from the start. Lamine Yamal advanced alone towards Lunin without support from a team-mate, allowing Dean Huijsen to carry the ball out from the back comfortably. Real Madrid were then able to move possession from one side of the pitch to the other before finding the third player required to build their attacks.

The opening goal illustrated the effectiveness of that approach. After Yamal’s unsuccessful attempt to press and Barcelona’s players failed to close down the ball-carrier, Bernardo Silva received possession and was given time and space to play a long pass towards Marc Cucurella, who had taken up an advanced position.

Cucurella needed only two touches before finding Diomande, who had moved forward from the centre. The Ivory Coast player then sent in a low cross which Gerard Martin failed to clear properly. The ball struck Mbappe before ending up in the net, with an element of fortune involved.

Man-to-man marking frustrates Barcelona

Real Madrid’s superiority was not limited to their work in possession. They also produced an exceptionally aggressive first-half defensive display based on man-to-man marking.

Huijsen and Konate were repeatedly willing to follow their assigned opponents deep into the attacking side of the pitch. Mourinho recognised that his team had not yet reached the required level of collective defensive cohesion when dropping back, so he opted to give each opposing player a direct marker.

That system allowed Real Madrid’s players to concentrate on individual assignments, reducing hesitation and limiting Barcelona’s ability to change the direction of play, retreat as a unit or rotate positions. Barcelona were unable to exploit the spaces in central areas because they lacked a player capable of making the off-the-ball runs needed to break through the defensive lines.

Another key individual contest took place on the left, where Lamine Yamal faced Marc Cucurella. The two world champions went head-to-head, but the player from Alia was unable to find a way past the Real Madrid full-back. Whenever Yamal received the ball, Cucurella closed him down quickly, forcing him to face away from goal and move possession backwards.

Real Madrid also won more physical duels and imposed a higher tempo in the challenges. Their defensive compactness helped them move more efficiently, conserve energy, recover possession more quickly and attack with greater freshness.

Camavinga makes the difference

As Barcelona appeared to gain control late on, Bernardo Silva’s influence began to decline through fatigue. Mourinho responded decisively from the bench, recognising that the period between the 70th and 90th minutes is often shaped by tiredness.

Eduardo Camavinga’s introduction proved decisive. Aurelien Tchouameni, who was at risk of suspension and restricted by the circumstances of the match, was supported by his fellow Frenchman. Camavinga worked hard defensively and made an important attacking contribution as the players around him began to tire.

He won a foot race with Cubarsi, stretching to touch the ball at exactly the right moment and presenting Mbappe with an excellent scoring opportunity. The move had begun with Gabriel Jesus losing possession after coming on as a substitute.

The changes from the bench therefore played a major part in determining the outcome. Real Madrid controlled and frustrated Barcelona, leaving Flick to identify the problems that continue to hinder his team in the biggest matches.

Mourinho, meanwhile, left his return to Camp Nou unbeaten. The victory strengthened confidence in his project and allowed him to claim an important win over Barcelona, something his predecessors achieved only on limited occasions.

Barcelona face Deportivo Alaves in La Liga on 31 October 2026, while Real Madrid play Racing Santander in La Liga on 1 November 2026.
