Nigeria’s Flamingos urged to maintain momentum before Mexico last-16 tie

Nigeria’s Flamingos have been urged to keep their focus and competitive spirit as they prepare to face Mexico in the last 16 of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

Acting Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) General Secretary Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme praised the team after their 3-1 victory over two-time champions Korea DPR secured their place in the knockout stage.

Ikpeme delivered his message during a visit to the Flamingos’ training session on Monday morning, with Nigeria’s meeting with Mexico scheduled for Thursday, October 29.

He called on the players to approach the tournament one match at a time and maintain the determination that carried them through the group stage.

The NFF official also urged the squad to produce their best performance as they pursue a place in the quarter-finals. He promised to attend Thursday’s fixture and offer his support as the team’s campaign continues.

Nigeria have scored six goals across their three matches at the tournament. Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and Oluebube Umejiaku have each scored twice, while Precious Oscar was on target in the victory over Puerto Rico.

Rodiat Kanyinsola Yusuf completed Nigeria’s scoring against Korea DPR with a free-kick.

The last-16 tie will bring together two nations that have previously won bronze medals at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria claimed their first podium finish in the competition at the 2022 tournament in India. They defeated Germany 3-2 on penalties in the third-place play-off after a 3-3 draw in normal time.

The Flamingos had taken a 3-0 lead after 63 minutes at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, but Germany fought back to level the match and force a penalty shootout.

Mexico also secured a bronze medal at last year’s tournament, which was hosted by Morocco. They overcame Brazil 3-1 in a penalty shootout after the match had ended 1-1.

Both teams therefore enter Thursday’s encounter with a record of success at this level, while Nigeria will be aiming to extend their current run and reach the quarter-finals.
