Tosin Adarabioyo injury worry could affect Nigeria’s future plans

Nigeria-eligible defender Tosin Adarabioyo is awaiting a medical assessment after appearing to suffer an injury during Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-1 Premier League victory over Coventry City.
The England-born centre-back, whose parents are Nigerian, was making his full Premier League debut for Spurs. He left the field in the 71st minute, with Matheus Fernandes taking his place.
According to The Standard, Adarabioyo went down inside the penalty area and signalled for medical assistance. Metro reports that the extent of the problem and any potential period on the sidelines will not be known until he has been assessed.
Tottenham have not confirmed the nature of the injury or provided a diagnosis.
Nigeria option remains open
Adarabioyo represented England through Under-19 level but remains eligible to play for Nigeria. The defender was previously approached by the Nigeria Football Federation during Jose Peseiro’s time as Super Eagles manager, but he declined the opportunity at that stage, according to Legit.ng.
That means he has never played for Nigeria and would not lose an international call-up as a result of the injury. However, his fitness could still be significant to the national team’s longer-term plans.
After joining Tottenham from Fulham, Adarabioyo needs regular Premier League football to establish himself and strengthen the case for any future approach from Nigeria. A lengthy absence could delay that progress, while a minor issue would have little lasting effect.
The defender’s injury also came in a match involving two other Nigeria internationals. Super Eagles players Taiwo Awoniyi and Frank Onyeka both appeared as substitutes at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, according to the same report.
Adarabioyo’s move to Spurs had previously been reported in connection with his stated desire to represent Nigeria. His international future, however, remains unresolved after his earlier decision to reject the federation’s approach.
The immediate priority is determining whether the incident against Coventry City is a brief setback or something more serious. With Tottenham yet to announce the diagnosis, the club’s next medical update should clarify whether Adarabioyo faces any period out of action.
For Nigeria, the issue is less about losing an established international player and more about whether an eligible Premier League defender can maintain the playing time and momentum that could make another approach worthwhile.
