PSG await Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scan after knee injury raises cruciate ligament fears

Paris St-Germain are waiting for further tests on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia after the Georgia winger suffered a serious knee injury during Tuesday’s 4-2 Champions League win over Barcelona.

Kvaratskhelia was forced off at the Parc des Princes after a heavy collision with Barcelona player Xavi Espart. The 59th-minute substitute fell immediately and was visibly in pain, reportedly unable to place his foot on the ground.

The nature of the injury has prompted fears that the 24-year-old may have damaged his cruciate ligament. Foot Mercato reported that initial examinations carried out after the match were not reassuring, citing French newspaper L’Equipe.

According to the report, people close to Kvaratskhelia were sufficiently concerned by the early findings to fear a cruciate ligament tear in his knee. Several individuals within the Georgia international’s circle expressed their anxiety about that possibility on Tuesday evening.

However, no definitive diagnosis has yet been made. PSG are understood to be waiting for the results of further medical examinations before making any announcement about the player’s condition.

Kvaratskhelia is due to undergo a magnetic resonance imaging scan on Wednesday. The examination will establish the precise nature of the injury and provide a clearer indication of how long he may be unavailable.

Confirmation of a cruciate ligament tear would represent a major setback for manager Luis Enrique and PSG. Such an injury would keep Kvaratskhelia out for several months and place his involvement in the remainder of the season in serious doubt.

The injury came despite an impressive result for the French club, who secured a 4-2 victory against Barcelona in the Champions League. PSG must now wait for the scan before assessing the full sporting impact of losing one of their key attacking players.
