Rangers International beat MC Algiers 2-0 to take control of CAF Champions League tie

Rangers International scored twice in the final seven minutes to secure a 2-0 first-leg victory over MC Algiers and gain a valuable advantage in their CAF Champions League tie.

The Flying Antelopes had been unable to break through during a closely contested match at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta. Their breakthrough finally came in the 84th minute, when Kenneth Igboke converted a penalty to put the Nigerian side ahead.

Rangers quickly made their advantage count. James Emo added a second goal three minutes later, finding the net in the 87th minute to give the home supporters further reason to celebrate.

The late burst ensured Rangers finished the match with both a clean sheet and a two-goal lead. It was a decisive conclusion to an encounter in which neither side had been able to establish a clear advantage for much of the game.

The result gives the Enugu-based club an important platform as they pursue progress in Africa’s premier club competition. Rangers will now travel to Algeria for the second leg, with MC Algiers needing to overturn the deficit on home territory.

Rangers will be expected to defend their lead with discipline and make the most of their opportunities as they attempt to complete the tie and reach the next stage of the competition.

Rangers face test in Algeria

The Flying Antelopes’ 2-0 advantage provides a strong foundation, but the tie remains unresolved. Their focus now turns to the return fixture in Algeria, where MC Algiers will seek a response and Rangers will aim to protect the lead they established in Abeokuta.

A further disciplined display would put Rangers in a strong position to secure passage to the next stage of the CAF Champions League.
