Djurgarden hand trials to Nigerian duo Inalegwu and Aaron

Swedish top-flight club Djurgarden have invited two promising Nigerian players from Ikonnekt Football Academy to train with the club, with both hoping to earn a contract.

Usman Emmanuel Inalegwu and Longji Aaron took part in a training session on Monday, according to Djurgarden’s official website.

Inalegwu is a left-footed central defender, while Aaron is a striker. The pair will spend time with the Swedish club’s coaching staff as they attempt to make a strong impression and secure a possible move.

The trial provides both players with an opportunity to begin a career in European football and follow a path already taken by several Nigerians at Djurgarden.

The club strengthened its links with Nigeria during the summer transfer window by signing forward Abdul Abdulmalik from National League side Boreham Wood.

Djurgarden reportedly paid more than £1.5 million for Abdulmalik. The fee made the transfer one of the largest sales involving a player from the fifth tier of English football.

Abdulmalik’s arrival added to the club’s Nigerian connections, with Haruna Garba, Prince Ikpe Ekong and Kennedy Igboananike among the other Nigerians to have represented Djurgarden.

Inalegwu and Aaron are now aiming to make a similar impression during their trial period. Their performances will be assessed by the coaching staff before the club decides whether to offer either player a contract.

Djurgarden are currently third in the Swedish top flight after 22 matches. They have 41 points and are 10 points behind league leaders IK Sirius.

For the two academy players, the trials represent a chance to demonstrate their ability at a club competing near the top of the Swedish league, while potentially securing a route into European football.
