Rochdale sign Irish-Nigerian midfielder Baba Adeeko from Wigan

Irish-Nigerian midfielder Baba Adeeko has joined Rochdale from Wigan, completing a move that takes the 23-year-old to the League Two club. The central midfielder has signed a contract running until 30 June 2027.

Adeeko’s switch was completed on 14 August 2026, bringing an end to his time with Wigan after more than seven years in the club’s system. He joined Wigan’s youth set-up from Wigan Youth in July 2019 before progressing to the Under-18 side and then Wigan Under-23s.

The midfielder moved into Wigan’s senior squad in July 2023 and spent the next three seasons with the first team. His arrival gives Rochdale an experienced central midfield option with a background in the English league system.

Born in Ballybane on 3 April 2003, Adeeko holds Irish and Nigerian nationality. He is 1.75m tall and favours his right foot.

Rochdale play in League Two, while Wigan compete in League One. Adeeko’s move therefore sees him switch clubs within the English Football League, joining Rochdale at the start of the 2026-27 campaign.

He has been registered as a Rochdale player wearing number 17, although he had not made an appearance in the club’s EFL Cup campaign at the time of the transfer. His listed market value is €300,000.

Adeeko’s career to date has been built entirely in England, beginning with Wigan’s youth ranks. His progression from the club’s youth teams to the senior side preceded his move to Rochdale, where his contract is in place for the next two seasons.

The transfer also marks the latest stage of Rochdale’s squad-building for the new season, with Adeeko joining from a club operating one division higher. His role is centred in midfield, where he will provide an option in the middle of the pitch.

Adeeko is now a Rochdale player, with his agreement at the club running until 30 June 2027.
