By Monsurah Olatunji
Nigeria forward Victor Boniface was the hero for Bayer Leverkusen, scoring a dramatic stoppage-time winner in a thrilling 4-3 victory over 10-man Wolfsburg.
The super-sub Nigerian international came off the bench and netted his second consecutive Bundesliga goal, helping his team secure the three points at the BayArena on Sunday afternoon.
Leverkusen initially led 2-1 after 32 minutes, but Wolfsburg responded strongly, turning the game around to lead 3-2 by halftime. Piero Hincapie equalized for Leverkusen just four minutes into the second half, heading in a cross from Alex Garcia.
With the match locked at 3-3, head coach Xabi Alonso brought Boniface on in the 68th minute to find a winning goal.
Although his initial shot was saved by Wolfsburg goalkeeper Kamil Grabara, the game shifted dramatically when Wolfsburg’s Yannick Gerhardt was sent off two minutes before stoppage time.
As the clock ran into added time, Boniface found space in the penalty area and unleashed a left-footed shot that hit the back of the net, igniting celebrations among the Leverkusen fans and sealing a memorable comeback victory.
