Taiwo Awoniyi targets goals as Coventry City prepare for Premier League return
Taiwo Awoniyi says he is ready to provide the goals Coventry City will need when they begin life back in the Premier League against Arsenal on Friday.
The Super Eagles striker has vowed to bring his scoring form to Coventry City as the club prepares for its top-flight return. Awoniyi believes goals, together with a strong work ethic, will be central to his contribution this season.
“I think for sure goals. Like I said, goals and hard work as well,” he said.
The Nigeria international also spoke about the players who have influenced him, citing late Nigerian striker Rashidi Yekini alongside former France and Arsenal forward Thierry Henry and Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba.
“When I watch the video clip of the late Rashidi Yekini of Nigeria and Thierry Henry and, of course, Didier Drogba”, Awoniyi added.
Awoniyi will now join forces with Nigeria team-mate Frank Onyeka at Coventry City. The two internationals are expected to play important roles as the club seeks to retain its Premier League status by the end of the season.
Their first challenge comes against Arsenal on Friday, with Coventry City facing an immediate test on their return to England’s top division. Awoniyi’s focus, however, is clear: he wants to contribute with goals while working hard for the team.
The forward arrives at Coventry City after an impactful four-year spell with Nottingham Forest. During his time at Forest, Awoniyi scored 23 goals in 103 appearances.
He also played a significant part in helping Nottingham Forest remain in the Premier League and reach the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup. His performances during that period established him as an important attacking figure before his move to Coventry City in August 2026.
At Coventry City, Awoniyi will be reunited with Onyeka as both players begin a new chapter with the newly promoted side. Their international experience will form part of the club’s efforts to compete successfully in the Premier League.
Awoniyi’s comments underline the responsibility he is prepared to accept. Having already delivered important contributions for Nottingham Forest, he is now determined to make an impact for Coventry City and help the club remain among the country’s top-flight teams.
The striker’s message is straightforward: he intends to combine hard work with goals as Coventry City face the demands of their Premier League campaign. Against Arsenal, he will have the opportunity to begin that mission on the opening day of the club’s return to the division.
