Trabzonspor target Al Hilal striker Darwin Nunez after Mohamed Salah deal
Trabzonspor have made an approach for Al Hilal striker Darwin Nunez after completing the signing of Egypt forward Mohamed Salah, according to Turkish broadcaster A Spor.
The Turkish club have presented an offer for the 27-year-old Uruguay international and are preparing to open discussions with Nunez, his representatives and Al Hilal, the report says. No further details have been disclosed about the nature of the proposal or the Saudi club’s response.
The move would represent another major statement of intent from Trabzonspor, who have already attracted worldwide attention by securing Salah in one of the most high-profile deals of the summer transfer window.
Salah arrived in Turkey on Wednesday afternoon and was greeted by a large crowd at Ataturk Airport. He is expected to undergo a medical before being formally presented by Trabzonspor, with that ceremony potentially taking place on Thursday.
The club’s president, Ertugrul Dogan, had previously declared that Trabzonspor could sign any star they wanted, challenging their domestic rivals in Turkey. The club’s agreement with Salah has given that claim considerable weight and appears to have encouraged them to pursue another internationally recognised forward.
Nunez spent last season with Al Hilal, making 24 appearances and scoring nine goals. He also provided five assists.
The striker joined Al Hilal from Liverpool during the summer of last year. However, the Saudi club’s winter signing of Karim Benzema disrupted Nunez’s place in the team. The change in the squad’s attacking options led manager Simone Inzaghi to use Nunez less frequently, prompting the player to ask to leave.
Trabzonspor are not the only Turkish club interested in the Uruguay forward. Besiktas are also seeking to secure his services and could consider a loan agreement, after their earlier negotiations to sign Salah failed to produce a deal.
Any move for Nunez would therefore extend an unusually ambitious period of transfer activity for Trabzonspor. Having completed the arrival of Salah, the club are now attempting to add another forward with experience at the highest level of European and international football.
The reported approach remains at an exploratory stage, with talks yet to begin with Nunez, his representatives and Al Hilal. The available information does not indicate whether the Saudi club would be willing to sell or loan the player, or whether the striker has agreed to join Trabzonspor.
For now, the club’s immediate focus remains on completing the formalities around Salah’s arrival. But the pursuit of Nunez suggests Trabzonspor’s summer plans do not end with the former Liverpool and Egypt star, as they look to strengthen their attack further and reinforce the bold message delivered by their president.
