Usor says Simon’s advice inspired stunning Nigeria winner against Madagascar

Moses Usor says encouragement from fellow Super Eagles winger Moses Simon gave him the confidence to take on defenders and score the decisive goal in Nigeria’s 2-1 win over Madagascar in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The LASK winger came on as a substitute and made an immediate impact in a closely fought match, producing the moment that secured all three points for Nigeria.

Usor collected the ball inside Nigeria’s half before accelerating towards the Madagascar defence. He beat two opponents with his pace and skill, then finished with an excellent strike.

The 24-year-old said Simon had told him during the warm-up to trust his ability and take opportunities to attack defenders one-on-one.

“I was warming up with Moses Simon when they called me, and we went in together. He advised me to just play my game and be myself,” Usor told the Super Eagles media.

“He said if you have the ball and you want to go one-on-one, you can take the risk. He gave me the confidence to play the game.”

‘It is still like a dream’

Usor said he entered the match determined to be positive and show what he could do, but admitted he was still surprised by the quality and importance of his goal.

“I went in with the mentality of taking risks and showing what I can do. It’s still a surprise to me. I still feel it is a dream, playing at this level. It is still like a dream to me,” he said.

“I was like, ‘Is this me?’ After my goal, I went down on my knees to pray. I really thank God for it.”

The match also fulfilled a long-standing ambition for Usor, who made his Super Eagles debut with members of his family in attendance.

“It was a different feeling because my family were also there. I was really happy seeing everyone there,” he said.

“This is something I have always dreamt of. It’s a good feeling being in camp with these players. I have always dreamt of this moment.

“It’s different playing alongside Lookman, Bassey and the others.”

Usor promises continued commitment

After his impressive introduction, Usor said he would continue to work hard and contribute whenever he is selected for Nigeria.

“I will always give my best whenever I’m on the pitch and contribute to the attack. I will do my best whenever I’m on the pitch and defend the badge,” added the winger.

“That is very important because I know Nigerians will be expecting more from me, and I will continue to give my best for the team.”
