Spain and Morocco vie for prized 2030 World Cup final as opening match compromise emerges

Spain is pushing to host the 2030 World Cup final, while Morocco is seeking a larger role in the tournament as negotiations continue over the distribution of its most important matches.
The Spanish Football Federation is working to ensure the final is played in Spain, relying on the country’s sporting standing and logistical capabilities as the main host of the tournament, alongside Portugal.
The venue for the final has not yet been officially decided. Madrid and Barcelona remain among the leading options under consideration.
Rafael Louzan, president of the Spanish Football Federation, said: “The final must be played in Spain, there is no other option. We are a superpower and a world leader in everything, but the greatest joy would be to play the final in Spain.”
His comments underline Spain’s belief that it should stage the tournament’s showpiece fixture.
Morocco, however, is continuing to press for a more prominent position within the joint hosting plan. Fouzi Lekjaa is leading efforts to strengthen the country’s role, with Casablanca emerging as one of the central locations in Morocco’s plans for the competition.
The country is building a huge stadium with a capacity of about 115,000 spectators. The project reflects Morocco’s ambition to host one of the most significant matches at the World Cup, potentially including the final.
Opening match in Morocco, final in Spain?
A possible compromise has emerged during the dispute, with the opening match taking place in Morocco and the final being staged in Spain, according to Spanish newspaper Marca.
Such an arrangement would give Morocco a high-profile role at the start of the tournament while allowing Spain to retain the most prestigious fixture.
It would also raise questions over how the three South American countries involved in the bid would feature in the event. They joined the hosting proposal to mark the 100th anniversary of the first World Cup.
The 2030 tournament is being planned as a shared event involving Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with the South American participation forming part of the centenary celebrations.
Talks over the match schedule are continuing behind the scenes. Spain remains determined to secure the final, while Morocco is seeking to obtain the greatest possible benefits from its involvement in the tournament.
With FIFA elections approaching and some calculations within UEFA becoming more complicated, the destination of the 2030 World Cup final remains undecided. Several possibilities are still being considered before a final decision is reached.
