Vinicius Junior injury gives Diomande chance to stake Real Madrid claim

A suspected absence for Vinicius Junior in the Clasico could prove a turning point in Diomande’s Real Madrid career, with the Ivorian now in contention for a starting role under Jose Mourinho.

Diomande impressed in the victory over Villarreal, scoring the first goal he had been waiting for and showing the pace, dribbling ability and movement Real Madrid may need to compensate for Vinicius’ potential absence.

The forward said he had been eager to break his scoring duck. Speaking to Real Madrid’s television channel, he explained that he chose to control the ball, turn and shoot quickly, a decision which finally produced the goal he had been seeking, according to Spanish newspaper AS.

His display against Villarreal was not an isolated performance. Diomande had entered the match averaging 4.86 successful dribbles per game and had already demonstrated his ability to win attacking duels.

He continued to trouble Villarreal’s defence with his movement and close control, creating space and opportunities for Kylian Mbappe. His contribution gave Real Madrid’s attack greater variety and made it more difficult for opponents to predict their next move.

Mourinho must now decide how best to use those qualities. Vinicius will be available for the Champions League meeting with Roma, leaving the manager to consider whether Diomande should be given another opportunity against Sevilla or be selected on the left wing for the Clasico.

Diomande said he was extremely excited about playing in the Champions League, describing participation in the competition as a dream for every child. He also expressed his gratitude at being able to experience it in a Real Madrid shirt.

Attention remains focused on Vinicius’ fitness ahead of the Clasico, but the situation has created a significant opening for Diomande. His performance against Villarreal suggested he can offer more than a temporary solution, with his direct running and ability to create attacking spaces providing Real Madrid with a different option.

The next step will be to persuade Mourinho that he deserves a place in the starting line-up even after the Brazilian forward returns.
