2024 CAF Awards: Edo Queens make club of the year shortlist

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

2023/2024 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership champions Edo Queens are amongst five teams shortlisted for the Club of the Year women ahead of this year’s CAF Awards.

Moses Aduku’s side not only won the Nigeria League title for the first time in the club’s history but also clinched the West Africa Zone B (WAFU-B) Women’s Champions League title in Cote D’Ivoire.

By doing so, the club qualified for the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League.

The Benin City-based side set and broke numerous records at the fourth edition of the Champions League.

They became the first Nigerian team to go unbeaten in their first two and three games at the competition.

The team also stunned two-time champions Mamelodi Sundowns, 2-1, to top the group and qualify for the semi-final, becoming the first Nigerian team to achieve such a feat.

Despite their fourth-place finish, Edo Queens announced themselves as one of the best women’s football teams on the continent.

They will jostle for the award with four other women’s football teams.

They include champions, TP Mazembe (Democratic Republic of Congo), AS FAR FC (Morocco), FC Masar (Egypt), and Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies (South Africa).
