Falconets duo in contention for CAF Young Player of the Year award

Two players from the Nigerian squad at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup has been nominated for the 2024 CAF Women’s Young Player of the year award.

Rivers Angels’ Chiamaka Okwuchukwu and Flourish Sabastine who recently joined Turkish side, Galatasaray made the nominees list.

They both played pivotal role in Falconets charge at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia.

The Nigerian sides reached the Round of 16 under the tutelage of coach Christopher Danjuma who was also nominated for the women’s coach of the year.

A notable absentee from the young player of the year nomination is Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team player, Shakirat Moshood who scored four goals with two assists at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Flamingos top goal scorer during qualifiers, Chidi Harmony also missed out of nomination.

Okwuchukwu and Sabastine will battle with six other players for the award.

They include Cameron Goalie, Cathy Biya, Naomi Eto (Cameroon), Habiba Sabry (Egypt), Stella Nyamekye (Ghana), Valerie Nekesa (Kenya), Lina Mokhtar Jumai (Morocco), and Nthabiseng Majiya (South Africa).
