Nigeria’s Flying Eagles begin WAFU B title defence with Ghana showdown in Ivory Coast

Nigeria’s Under-20 side, the Flying Eagles, have landed in Ivory Coast to launch the defence of their WAFU B U-20 Championship crown, with a high-stakes opening clash against arch-rivals Ghana set to headline the group stage.

The defending champions arrived in Abidjan on Monday morning before making their way onward to Yamoussoukro, the host city for the regional tournament, which also doubles as the qualifying competition for the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.

Coached by Abdu Maikaba, the Flying Eagles are under pressure to retain their title and secure an early ticket to the continental finals, as West Africa’s traditional powerhouses assemble some of the region’s brightest young talents.

Tough start as Ghana await in opening fixture

Nigeria begin their title defence against the Black Satellites of Ghana on 27 July at the Lycee Scientifique de Yamoussoukro, a fixture that revives one of African football’s most enduring rivalries at youth level.

The meeting between the two West African giants is expected to be one of the standout matches of the group stage, with both countries boasting rich histories in youth competitions and strong ambitions to dominate the sub-region.

Maikaba and his technical crew led the squad out of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Monday, heading first to Abidjan before the road journey to Yamoussoukro, where all of Nigeria’s group matches will be staged.

Group B route: Togo and Burkina Faso also in the way

Following their opener against Ghana, the Flying Eagles will face the Junior Sparrow Hawks of Togo three days later, again at the Lycee Scientifique de Yamoussoukro.

Nigeria will then complete their Group B campaign against the Young Stallions of Burkina Faso on 2 August at the same venue.

All three fixtures are expected to test the depth and organisation of Maikaba’s squad as Nigeria attempt to navigate a competitive section featuring teams keen to challenge the established order in West African youth football.

Pathway to 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations

Beyond regional bragging rights, the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship serves as the qualification pathway for the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations.

Only the top-performing teams from the sub-region will advance to the continental tournament, making every group match potentially decisive.

Nigeria, historically one of Africa’s strongest forces at youth level, will be looking to secure early qualification and build momentum ahead of the next U-20 AFCON cycle.

Questions raised over Nigeria squad list

While the team has already departed Nigeria, some fans and observers have voiced concerns over the lack of an officially published squad list.

Comments circulating among supporters have highlighted frustration at the absence of clarity over player selection, with some questioning whether the pool is dominated by talent from a single club.

“Where is the list of players… Nawa oh NFF” one comment read, reflecting growing demands for transparency from the Nigeria Football Federation over its youth team selections.

Another added: “WHERE IS THE TEAM LIST? ABI NA ONLY MAVLON FC PLAYERS?”

The federation has yet to issue a full, formal breakdown of the Flying Eagles’ travelling party, but expectations remain high that Nigeria’s Under-20 side will once again challenge strongly for regional honours as they begin their title defence in Yamoussoukro.
