Messi’s World Cup final speech ‘purely tactical’, says Mac Allister’s father, after viral video sparks speculation

Lionel Messi’s team talk before Argentina’s 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain was “purely tactical” and not a sign of dressing-room unrest, according to the father of midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, after a clipped video of the speech triggered widespread online speculation.

Viral clip fuels rumours of Argentina crisis

A short video, broadcast by ESPN and heavily shared on social media, showed Messi addressing his Argentina team-mates in the dressing room before the final in New York – a match La Albiceleste went on to lose 1-0 after extra time.

In the footage, the captain can be heard telling the squad: “هيا يا شباب، حافظوا على هدويكم. الاهم هو ان تحافظوا على هدويكم” – “Come on, lads, stay calm. The most important thing is that you stay calm.”

Messi then adds: “دعونا ننسى كل شيء. دعونا نلعب فقط. دعونا نركز على المباراة يا شباب” – “Let’s forget everything. Let’s just play. Let’s focus on the match, lads.”

Those final lines in particular prompted a wave of online theories suggesting the 2022 world champions had been rocked by internal disagreements and that Messi was attempting to defuse tensions moments before kick-off.

‘Even I started to wonder’

Carlos Mac Allister, a former player and the father of Alexis Mac Allister, moved to end the speculation in a radio interview reported by Argentine newspaper La Nacion.

He admitted that, on first viewing, he too was unsettled by the way the clip was presented.

“I sent a message to Alexis asking him: ‘What happened in the dressing room? Did something happen?’” he said. “If I myself had started to wonder, then imagine what other people thought.”

According to Mac Allister Sr, his son immediately dismissed any suggestion of a bust-up among the squad and explained that Messi’s words had been taken out of context.

‘Only about how to play the game’

Carlos Mac Allister stressed that the captain’s address was focused on match strategy rather than any off-field issues.

He said his son told him that Messi had been talking about “how to play the game from a technical point of view” – concentrating on passing, movement, interchanging positions and maintaining possession.

The emphasis, he explained, was on avoiding long balls and not surrendering control of the match to Spain, who ultimately prevailed with a goal in extra time.

The father argued that the fragmented nature of the leaked video had opened the door to unfounded interpretations.

He insisted that the lines which attracted attention were simply “part of the tactical instructions before the start of the match”, not a sign of unrest behind the scenes.

Spain’s superiority, not Argentina’s splits

Despite the furore surrounding the clip, Carlos Mac Allister underlined that Argentina’s defeat at MetLife Stadium was the result of Spain’s quality on the night rather than any internal crisis in the world champions’ camp.

He said all members of the “tango” side – as he referred to the national team – had given everything in their attempt to retain the trophy they won in Qatar in 2022.

He added that, in his view, Spain were “the better team that night”, and that the loss should be attributed to the European champions’ superiority rather than to dressing-room problems or a breakdown in unity.

The comments from Mac Allister’s father will be seen as an attempt to draw a line under the speculation that followed Argentina’s near miss at a historic third consecutive World Cup triumph, and to reframe Messi’s much-discussed words as part of a standard pre-match team talk that was never meant to signal crisis.
