Lisandro Martinez hits back at Argentina critics after World Cup final heartbreak

Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez has issued an emotional message to fans – and a pointed rebuke to the team’s critics – just days after the world champions’ bid for back-to-back titles ended in defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.

The 26-year-old centre-back, who was forced off injured midway through the final, posted a lengthy statement on Instagram in which he thanked supporters, praised team-mates and staff, congratulated Spain – and warned that “the fall of greats is a source of joy for small minds”.

Argentina had been seeking to become the first team since Brazil in 1958 and 1962 to win consecutive World Cups, but were outclassed by a relentless Spain side, who secured only their second world title after their 2010 triumph.

‘Heart in pain’ but pride intact

Martinez opened his message by underlining the emotional cost of coming so close to defending the title won in Qatar in 2022.

“With a heart in deep pain because we didn’t manage to bring home the trophy we were all dreaming of, but with indescribable pride in this shirt, in my team-mates, the coaching staff, the directors, the medical staff, the cooks, the kit managers, and every person who helped make this journey go as well as possible,” he wrote.

The Manchester United defender, a key figure in Lionel Scaloni’s squad, was substituted during the final because of injury, adding another layer of personal frustration to Argentina’s defeat.

Message to fans – and to critics

Martinez reserved special words for Argentina’s supporters, whose presence has been a defining feature of the national team’s recent successes.

He continued: “Above all, I thank you, because you gave us your love, your support and your strength, that passion that always distinguishes us, and the unity of a people that I hope will remain firm over time.”

Addressing the result and the journey to the final, he added: “To our fans I say: the result does not sum up the road we travelled. We faced many difficulties, we achieved what seemed impossible, and we never once looked for excuses. Instead, we always found reasons to keep going.”

Martinez stressed that representing Argentina extended beyond the pitch.

“We defended our colours beyond the limits of the pitch,” he said. “We lived unforgettable moments with the national team, alongside our families, and with your unlimited support. Representing you will always be a great honour for us.”

He closed his statement with a pointed line seemingly directed at those revelling in Argentina’s loss.

“Remember always that the fall of greats is a source of happiness for small minds. Thank you all. Take care of our country. I love you, Argentina.”

Respect for Spain’s new champions

Despite his evident disappointment, Martinez also acknowledged Spain’s achievement in dethroning the reigning champions.

“I would like to congratulate Spain on their well-deserved title,” he wrote, recognising the dominance of La Roja during the tournament and in the final itself.

Argentina, three-time world champions (1978, 1986, 2022), “did not have the means to disrupt the invincible La Roja machine”, as Spanish media have described it, with Spain’s second World Cup crown cementing a new era for the European side.

The defeat has triggered intense debate and conspiracy theories in parts of the Argentine media and online, particularly after a cryptic social media message posted by captain Lionel Messi.

Speculation grew to such an extent that the father of the Argentina captain felt compelled to speak publicly to clarify the meaning of Messi’s message and cool talk of hidden tensions or dramatic decisions in the wake of the loss.
