Ahmed Abdullahi in talks over Eyupspor switch as Sunderland future grows uncertain

Nigeria forward Ahmed Abdullahi is in advanced discussions over a move to Eyupspor, with the Sunderland striker omitted from Regis Le Bris’ latest senior pre-season squad as doubts over his future at the Stadium of Light deepen.

The 22-year-old, who has represented Nigeria at Under-20 level, did not feature in Sunderland’s 5-1 pre-season victory over York City, instead turning out for the club’s Under-21 side against South Shields. His absence from first-team duty has intensified expectations that he is set to leave the Championship club.

Talks between Sunderland and Turkish Super Lig side Eyupspor are ongoing, according to the Sunderland Echo, although no final agreement has yet been reached.

The proposed transfer is seen as an opportunity for Abdullahi to revive a career that has stalled since his arrival in England, with senior minutes proving elusive amid fitness problems and strong competition for places.

Sunderland spell yet to take off

Abdullahi joined Sunderland from Belgian side Gent in August 2024 on a four-year contract, arriving as a highly rated young attacking talent. However, injuries have severely disrupted his progress and he is still waiting to make his competitive debut for the six-time English champions.

While he has struggled to break into the first team, Abdullahi has shown his scoring instincts at youth level. The forward has registered six goals in seven appearances for Sunderland’s Under-21s, underlining the ability that initially attracted interest from clubs across Europe.

Despite those performances, Sunderland appear willing to sanction his departure in order to provide him with regular senior football, with attacking competition in Le Bris’ squad limiting his chances of a breakthrough.

Competition for places and Turkish interest

Abdullahi faces a crowded field in Sunderland’s attacking department, with Brian Brobbey, Wilson Isidor and several other forwards currently ahead of him in the pecking order. That hierarchy makes significant first-team opportunities under Le Bris unlikely in the short term.

Eyupspor, preparing for another season in the Turkish top flight, view the Nigerian as a long-term option in attack and are keen to conclude a deal in the coming days. The Istanbul club believe he can develop into a key figure if given consistent game time.

For Abdullahi, a move to Turkey could offer the sustained run of senior football that has been missing since he left Belgium, potentially allowing him to re-establish his reputation after a difficult spell in England.

Super Eagles prospects

Before his switch to Sunderland, Abdullahi was considered one of Nigeria’s most promising young forwards. He featured for the Flying Eagles at the 2023 Africa U20 Cup of Nations and, earlier in his career, drew interest from Borussia Dortmund and Olympique Marseille before opting to sign for Gent.

A successful stint at Eyupspor could also have implications for his international prospects. Regular performances in the Super Lig may help push him back into contention for future Super Eagles squads, with head coach Eric Chelle continuing to monitor emerging attacking options ahead of the upcoming international break.

For now, Abdullahi’s immediate focus remains on resolving his club future, with all parties hoping that negotiations between Sunderland and Eyupspor can be brought to a conclusion soon.
