Kevin Akpoguma completes free transfer to Frosinone on two-year deal
Kevin Akpoguma has completed a free transfer to Serie A club Frosinone, ending his 13-year association with TSG Hoffenheim and taking him outside Germany for the first time in his professional career.
The experienced defender has signed a two-year contract with Frosinone, known as the Canarini, which will keep him at the club until 30 June 2028.
Akpoguma became a free agent after departing Bundesliga side TSG Hoffenheim at the end of last season. His move brings to a close a lengthy spell with the German club, where he established himself as a dependable and versatile centre-back.
The 31-year-old joined Hoffenheim from Karlsruher SC in 2013. During his time with Die Kraichgauer, he made 175 Bundesliga appearances and scored three goals.
He also spent periods away from Hoffenheim on loan at Fortuna Dusseldorf and Hannover 96, gaining further experience in German football before making the move to Italy.
The transfer represents a new stage in Akpoguma’s career. Although he was born in Germany and progressed through the country’s youth teams, he later chose to represent Nigeria at senior international level.
Akpoguma changed his international allegiance to Nigeria in 2020. Since then, he has won eight caps for the Super Eagles and will hope that regular first-team football in Italy can help him revive his international career.
His move to Frosinone is the first time he will play outside Germany as a professional. The defender’s experience in the Bundesliga, along with his ability to operate in different defensive roles, will now be brought to Serie A.
Akpoguma’s career has so far been closely linked to German football, particularly Hoffenheim, but his latest transfer gives him the opportunity to begin a new chapter in Italy.
The defender joins Frosinone on a free transfer after leaving Hoffenheim, with his new agreement running through June 2028.
