Edo Queens win WAFU B Women’s Champions League after penalty shootout victory

Edo Queens secured the 2026 WAFU B Women’s Champions League title by beating Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies 4-1 on penalties after a dramatic 2-2 draw in the final.

The Nigerian side twice recovered from falling behind during an eventful contest before keeping their composure from the spot to claim the trophy.

Ampem Darkoa Ladies made the stronger start, taking the lead in only the second minute through Beline Nyarko. Their advantage lasted just two minutes, with Doosuur Anastasia Atume scoring in the fourth minute to bring Edo Queens level.

The early exchanges set the tone for a final in which neither team was able to establish sustained control. Both sides continued to compete for momentum, with the match remaining finely balanced as it moved into its closing stages.

Nyarko then restored Ampem Darkoa’s lead with 16 minutes remaining, putting the Ghanaian champions in sight of the trophy for a second time.

Edo Queens responded by committing players forward in search of another equaliser. Their pressure finally produced a decisive moment deep into stoppage time, when Oluebube Umejiaku found the net to make it 2-2 and force the final into a penalty shootout.

The Nigerian champions were faultless during the shootout, converting all four of their penalties. Ampem Darkoa, by contrast, scored only one of their three attempts and missed twice, allowing Edo Queens to complete a 4-1 victory.

The result means Edo Queens will represent the region in the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League.

The title capped an impressive campaign for the Nigerian champions, who also collected two individual awards. Oluwakemi Adegbuyi was named WAFU B Player of the Tournament after her performances on the wing.

Atume, who scored Edo Queens’ first equaliser in the final, finished the competition as its leading scorer and received the Golden Boot.

The final victory was particularly significant because Edo Queens had to recover from an early setback in normal time and then withstand another period of pressure after Nyarko’s second goal. Umejiaku’s late intervention kept the team in contention, before the shootout provided the clearest separation between the finalists.

Edo Queens converted each of their four penalties, while Ampem Darkoa’s two misses ultimately decided the contest. The 4-1 shootout scoreline therefore secured the championship for the Nigerian side, despite the final itself ending with the teams level at 2-2 after regulation time.
