NPFL set for multi-billion naira sponsorship deal after new chairman is named
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is expected to announce a sponsorship agreement worth several billions of naira alongside the unveiling of the competition’s new chairman, according to BSNSports.com.ng.
A senior official of the NationalSportsCommission (NSC), speaking to BSN Sports on condition of anonymity, said negotiations over the proposed sponsorship package had reached an advanced stage.
The agreement is expected to provide a major financial boost to Nigeria’s domestic top-flight league, with the value of the deal forecast to exceed previous sponsorship commitments.
The planned announcement comes during a period of significant upheaval in Nigerian football. Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the NFF Executive Committee have reportedly resigned en masse.
That leadership crisis has created uncertainty over the administration of the NPFL, which has already begun its new season and is due to continue with Matchday 2 this weekend.
The new commercial agreement is expected to be revealed shortly after the appointment of the next NPFL chairman. The NSC official said the sponsor would be introduced as part of the same process.
“Let me reveal this to you. As soon as the new league chairman is unveiled, a league sponsor that will bring in billions of naira will also be unveiled to boost the standard of the league,” the source said.
The identity of the prospective sponsor and the precise value of the proposed contract have not yet been disclosed. Both details are expected to be made public when the new NPFL leadership is formally unveiled.
The anticipated deal would represent a substantial increase on the league’s previous commercial arrangement. Former NPFL Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye secured a three-year sponsorship agreement reported to be worth $2.5 million per year.
That contract was valued at $7.5 million over its full duration. The latest package is expected to surpass those financial commitments and provide further resources to improve the NPFL’s organisation, commercial appeal and overall standards.
The development could offer important financial support for the league at a crucial stage of the season. Stakeholders have increasingly called for stronger commercial partnerships and greater investment in the domestic game.
The NPFL’s next phase will therefore be shaped not only by the arrival of a new chairman, but also by the scale of the sponsorship package and the resources it brings. The proposed agreement is expected to help strengthen the league’s operations and improve its wider commercial value.
