Akuneto backs Super Eagles to overcome Guinea-Bissau in AFCON qualifier

Manchester City U17 coach Chuks Akuneto believes Nigeria’s Super Eagles have the experience required to withstand the pressure and defeat Guinea-Bissau in Tuesday’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group L match in Bissau.
The three-time African champions face the Djurtus at the Estadio Nacional 24 de Setembro in their second group fixture, with Guinea-Bissau arriving as the early leaders after winning 2-0 away to Tanzania in their opening match.
Akuneto, who previously managed Oldham Athletic U18, told Completesports.com that Nigeria’s players were capable of dealing with the demands of a difficult away game.
“I’m backing the Super Eagles for victory come Tuesday,” the former Oldham Athletic U18 head coach said.
Guinea-Bissau’s opening victory has put them at the top of Group L, adding significance to a match in which Nigeria will be seeking to build on their own start to the qualifying campaign.
However, Akuneto does not believe the occasion will overwhelm Eric Chelle’s side. He said the Super Eagles had enough experience to manage the different challenges likely to arise during the contest.
“I think the Super Eagles players are seasoned and highly experienced players who understand how to navigate tricky away games,” Akuneto said.
“And I see them coming out on top in Tuesday’s match.
“They know how to be cautious and how to go for it when the opportunity presents itself. Pressure is the name of the game, and I don’t think it is something they haven’t experienced before now.”
Nigeria’s trip to Bissau is therefore expected to test their ability to balance caution with attacking intent, as they attempt to secure a positive result against a Guinea-Bissau team that began the group stage with an away win.
