Semi Ajayi strengthens Super Eagles case after double award in Hull draw

Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi was named both the Premier League’s Player of the Match and Hull City’s official fans’ choice after the club’s 1-1 draw with Brentford at the MKM Stadium.

Ajayi said earning a point at home was positive, although he admitted Hull were disappointed not to take all three points.

The centre-back received 43.6% of the vote in Hull’s official poll, finishing ahead of Oli McBurnie, Tim Iroegbunam and Lewis Coyle. Premium Times reported the result in its 26 October roundup, while Soccernet had previewed the fixture in its article, Hull City vs Brentford: Preview, h2h as Ajayi meets Igor Thiago.

Ajayi’s performance helped Hull respond to their defeat by Fulham the previous week. He won five of his six tackles, made four clearances, recovered possession five times and produced two interceptions.

The combined total of his clearances, recoveries and interceptions was 11, underlining his contribution as Hull secured a point against Brentford.

Ajayi reflects on Hull’s response

Ajayi highlighted the importance of Hull’s reaction after the loss to Fulham. While the draw ended with the defender collecting both individual awards, he made clear that the result fell short of what Hull had wanted from the match.

“A point at home is always positive,” Ajayi said, while acknowledging that missing out on victory was frustrating.

His showing comes at a significant time for Nigeria’s central-defensive options, with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle preparing to name his squad.

Gabriel Osho is serving a three-game suspension after Cardiff’s unsuccessful appeal against his red card. Calvin Bassey, meanwhile, played every minute of Fulham’s victory over Coventry.

Ajayi’s statistics against Brentford included five tackles won from six attempts, together with 11 clearances, recoveries and interceptions. A Premier League Player of the Match award does not guarantee selection for a national team squad, but the display adds weight to his claim for inclusion when Chelle chooses his group for Tanzania.
